South Africa – Musician DJ Maphorisa has accused Samthing Soweto of poor business practice and professionalism, after the absence of the vocalist’s name on a song part-made by the Scorpion King producer landed on streaming platforms, led to outrage from fans.
The song, Amalanga Awafani, dropped on Tuesday, sparking widespread outrage on social media, with X users expressing their discontent and demanding justice, and music credits, for Samthing Soweto, whose given name is Samkelo Lelethu Mdolomba.
Mas Musiq, Lawd Weezy and TO Starquality are other artists featured on the song.
Maphorisa has in the past been accused of stifling or exploiting the careers of other artists such as Shasha and Sir Trill.
After the song’s release, Samthing Soweto posted a broken-hearted emoji reaction on X, seemingly confirming fears that he had been deliberately snubbed by Maphorisa and the other artists featured on the track.
An incensed Maphorisa then took to Instagram, to voice his disappointment at having his integrity questioned.
In the video, a fuming Maphorisa said they decided to remove Samthing Soweto from the credits as he was fighting them over the music rights for the song. They had thus decided to remove him and deal with the consequences of doing so later, he said.
“I’ve saved this culture of South African music, South African music is driven by this m** f***, I’ve saved a lot of things, I have crawled for you guys,” he said on Instagram.
“Don’t make me a bad person… Everyone wants to see me down because I’m the guy, I have made this sh** happen, amapiano is in Africa… Do you see what I have done for this country.
“You help people and they betray you, but I am still here, still standing and still strong,” said Maphorisa.
He also urged fans not to blame Mas Musiq, who is using the track as part of his album rollout, for the fight over song credits.
