DJ Hlo hits back at trolls after winning Ukhozi FM’s song of the year

South Africa’s fast rising star Hlosiwe ‘DJ Hlo’ Mthalane has hit back at trolls after she became an overnight celebrity on social media as she was announced the winner of Ukhozi FM’s 2021 Song of the year.

DJ Hlo, whom many claim they have never heard of had her song Isibani featuring DJ Manzo and Siboniso ranked number one with 214 966 votes outshining Zakes Bantwini’s Osama, DJ Maphorisa’s Izolo and other fan favourites.

Many social media users claimed the votes were rigged and there are more deserving artists than her.

Hlo has refused to be bullied as she decided to hit back at trolls saying she’s glad to have made history.

“It feels amazing, regardless of the backlash. History has been made as the first female DJ to cross over the year, so it feels amazing. My social media has skyrocketed. My life just changed in a blink of an eye. This is just huge for me,” she said.

Speaking about the backlash, all she could say was, “it’s hard to believe because I’ve been on this thing since 2020. I was in the top 10, I was number five. I’ve been campaigning everywhere to promote but I guess people will say whatever they want to say.”

The DJ adds that she has started receiving calls from major local artists giving her words of encouragement and telling her to keep keeping up.

“I’ve been getting phone calls from big artists who would love to collaborate with me. Nothing is confirmed yet but something big is coming,” said Hlo.
