‘I cannot carry burden any further’- Tshedi Mholo on exit from Malaika

Date:

South African vocalist Matshediso ‘Tshedi’ Mholo has announced her official exit from afro-pop music group Malaika.

Tshedi who has been part of the group since 2003 and was the leading vocalist said she was leaving the duo to pursue her own ambitions that include her businesses, social-activism and gospel music.

She said she will no longer sing and perform under the Malaika banner with immediate effect.

In a statement posted on her Instagram page, she revealed that there was no animosity involved in her exit. The exit is meant to elevate her into other levels of her life and career.

“Being in the band took a toll on me on so many levels and I have reached a stage where I cannot carry the burden any further. I have constantly found myself under the pressure of being the only girl in the band and having to live up to certain expectations.

“Even after flying solo in 2013, it has been somewhat difficult to cut through the clutter without the shadow of the Malaika cloud following me every step of the way. It has been to my benefit in some instances and my downfall in some,” read part of the statement.

The Malaika group rose to fame as one of the competitor for the group Mafikizolo. They produced hit songs such as Destiny. It was initially made up of three members, Tshedi, Bongani Nvhaba and the late Jabulani Ndaba.

Tshedi’s exit leaves Bongani as a solo artist unless he decides to recruit another artist to keep the band name alive.

In her statement Tshedi wished Bongani well in his career and hinted he could replace her if need be.

“If there is one thing being part of Malaika has taught me over the years it is that life is too short to not chase any dream a person might have. That said, I hope my decision would serve as an inspiration to anyone out there who might not be scared to chase their goals individually and independently”.
