Cape Verde’s national football team returned home to an extraordinary reception on Sunday, with tens of thousands of supporters lining the streets of Praia to celebrate the Blue Sharks’ unforgettable debut at the FIFA World Cup.
The players arrived to scenes of jubilation after their historic campaign ended with a dramatic extra-time defeat to defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32. Fans packed the airport and surrounding streets, waving national flags, singing, dancing and beating drums as they welcomed the squad home.
The celebrations coincided with Cape Verde’s Independence Day, marking 51 years since the archipelago gained independence from Portugal, adding even greater significance to the occasion. An open-top parade carried the players through Praia as thousands of supporters applauded a team that had captured the imagination of football fans around the world.
Goalkeeper Vozinha, one of the breakout stars of the tournament, thanked supporters for the overwhelming reception and said the team was proud to celebrate with the nation despite narrowly missing out on a place in the next round. His performances throughout the competition earned worldwide recognition after a series of outstanding displays against some of football’s biggest nations.
Supporters chanted the names of several players, including defender Pico Lopes, while many queued for autographs and photographs with their heroes. The atmosphere resembled a national festival, reflecting the pride generated by Cape Verde’s remarkable achievement.
Ranked 67th in the world before the tournament, Cape Verde exceeded all expectations during its first-ever World Cup appearance. The Blue Sharks held European champions Spain to a goalless draw in their opening match before producing more impressive performances to reach the knockout stage, becoming one of the tournament’s biggest surprise packages.
Their dream run came to a heartbreaking end against Lionel Messi’s Argentina. Cape Verde twice fought back to level the match, forcing the world champions into extra time before a late deflected goal from Cristian Romero’s header, which came off Diney Borges, sealed a 3-2 victory for Argentina.
Head coach Pedro Leitรฃo Brito, widely known as Bubista, praised his players for proving that a small island nation could compete with the world’s elite. He said the team had created a lasting legacy by inspiring Cape Verdeans and showing that determination and belief could overcome enormous odds.
Although their World Cup journey has ended, Cape Verde’s performances have transformed the national team into sporting icons. Their historic campaign has united the country, earned admiration across the globe and established the Blue Sharks as one of African football’s greatest underdog stories.
