Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested three suspects after seven members of the same family were abducted and killed in a case that has shocked communities along the north coast.
Authorities say the victims were taken from their home in Newtown, Newark, on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, before being transported to Melmoth, where their bodies were later discovered on Wednesday.
The investigation was triggered when a domestic worker arrived at the residence and found evidence of a break-in, with the family missing along with a vehicle.
Police moved quickly, leading to the arrest of two suspects in Hlomendlini. A third suspect was later apprehended in Dendetu, Sundumbili. Officers recovered 11 mobile phones during the operation, along with a firearm.
Investigators allege the suspects forcibly entered the home and restrained the victims before taking them to Melmoth. One of the suspects is believed to have previously worked for the family.
Police further allege that the victims were forced to hand over banking details and PIN numbers, with several financial transactions carried out during the ordeal.
According to authorities, three victims were shot and four others were stabbed. The bodies were discovered shortly after the suspects were tracked down.
Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi confirmed the arrests and said investigations remain ongoing.
He warned that cases involving individuals known to victims are a growing concern, particularly in isolated areas, and urged the public to remain vigilant when employing staff.
Police say they are also examining whether the suspects may be connected to other crimes in the region.
The three suspects, aged 21, 26, and 28, are due to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 24 April 2026, facing charges including kidnapping, murder, rape, and armed robbery.
Authorities say the situation is still developing as further evidence is being analysed.
