The Germiston Magistrate’s Court has issued a warrant of arrest for South African musician and television personality Molemo Katleho Maarohanye, popularly known as Jub Jub, after he failed to appear in court on Monday.
The warrant will, however, not be immediately enforced. The court ordered that it be held over until 7 September, when Maarohanye is expected to return to court. His lawyer told the court that the Uyajola 9/9 presenter had been booked off sick since Thursday, 20 August.
Maarohanye remains out on R5,000 bail as the criminal case against him continues.
Charges stem from e-hailing driver confrontation
The case arises from an alleged confrontation involving an e-hailing driver in Edenvale on 14 June.
According to police allegations, Maarohanye confronted the driver after a woman identified as his girlfriend was dropped off at a residence. He allegedly accused the driver of having a romantic relationship with her.
Police allege that the confrontation escalated, with Maarohanye forcing the driver into his vehicle and preventing him from leaving.
During the incident, Maarohanye allegedly discharged a firearm in the driver’s direction. The driver was not injured and managed to escape before reporting the incident at a nearby police station.
Maarohanye faces charges relating to the alleged unlawful discharge of a firearm in a public place and pointing an object likely to lead another person to believe it was a firearm. Other reports on the case have also cited allegations including kidnapping.
Maarohanye has denied the allegations against him, describing the charges as fabricated.
High Court previously granted R5,000 bail
Following his arrest in June, Maarohanye launched an urgent application in the Johannesburg High Court over the delay in bringing him before the Germiston Magistrate’s Court and sought his release on bail pending his first appearance.
The High Court granted the application on 16 June and ordered that he be released on R5,000 bail.
His case was subsequently postponed to 24 August to allow police to continue their investigations. Monday’s scheduled appearance ended without Maarohanye in court, resulting in the warrant being issued.
The National Prosecuting Authority confirmed the warrant and said the matter will return to court on 7 September.
