MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) set to resume after four-year break

MTV Africa and MTV Base have announced that 2021 will see the return of their continental awards with the glamorous MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) set to resume in February.

The awards ceremony will be held virtually on 20 February 2021 in partnership with Uganda, the country that has been dubbed “The Pearl of Africa”.

The virtual ceremony which aims to celebrate African culture, music and creativity will be broadcast live from Kampala on MTV Base and MTV. The iconic awards will have 20 categories in which artistes from across the continent will have to battle out for.

MAMA brings along new unique categories never seen before known as the Best lockdown performance which celebrates outstanding performances which took place virtually during lockdown.

Under the nomination criteria, an artiste must have released their music video between October 1, 2019, and October 1, 2020.

Followers and fans of those nominated will have a chance to vote and determine who wins the gongs.

The MAMAs that began in 2008 have honored and awarded some of the most iconic artistes on the continent. They are returning after a four-year break, with the last awards hosted by South Africa.
