‘This isn’t a comeback’: former kwaito child star speaks on return to music

SOUTH AFRICA – Former child star Msawawa, who once enthralled the world of music with his brand of kwaito music as an adolescent, is set to make a return to the world of showbiz after being bedeviled by financial problems in the last few years.

Siboniso “Msawawa” Dlamini shot to fame before he hit his teens with the popular song, Wawungakanani.

Speaking to TshisaLIVE, the 35-year-old, who started making waves when he was nine, said he has been making music on the sidelines and never left the music scene.

“This isn’t a comeback, people who follow me know I’ve been in music. This single I’m going to release is not a comeback.

“I’ve worked with Vukani on a song, Izandla Phezulu, featuring Calvinator from Uzalo. We’ll be shooting a music video between Joburg and Durban,” he said.

Msawawa said he was now filming a documentary about his career.

“The Msawawa Youth Foundation I formed in 2015. I’m filming a documentary that delves into my life and career, highlighting the importance of documenting my experiences and the significant events that unfolded.”

In 2020, Msawawa confessed that he had found it hard to deal with fame earlier on, something which had derailed his life.

“Fame overpowered me and I became reckless. “Being famous didn’t work for me. It made me big-headed. There was a time when I was famous yet broke,” he said.

At the time, Msawawa said he was turning to God after multiple attempts at comebacks had failed.

“I tried everything to remain relevant, but it didn’t work and my fame faded. I decided to go to church and became a born-again Christian…I pray that God humbles me all the time. When I am big again, I don’t want to look down on people,” he revealed.
