Employees at the Joburg Post, an online publication owned by former sportscaster Walter Mokoena have accused him of arrogance and unethical behavior, as the businessman has failed to pay their salaries on a few occasions leading to court action.
Mokoena is reportedly in the financial doldrums, after some of his business ventures failed to take off.
A staffer at the publication who spoke to Sunday World said employees at the publication were frustrated by the former SABC presenter’s unprofessional behaviour.
“In 2023, I joined The Joburg Post, excited for the opportunity to contribute to the company’s growth.
“However, what started as enthusiasm soon turned into frustration and disappointment as I, along with my colleagues, experienced a series of injustices and unethical behaviour,” the employee said.
On the months that Mokoena paid salaries, the employee said, he did so late and often after debit orders had bounced and they had already defaulted on payments of accounts.
“Despite our dedicated work, Walter Mokoena failed to fulfill his obligations, consistently delaying salary payments and disregarding our concerns.
“His actions have not only caused financial strain but have also eroded trust and morale within the team,” the senior staff member added.
Another staffer claimed that Mokoena dealt with them in an arrogant manner, despite being in the wrong.
“Despite legal recourse and promises of payment, he has failed to honour his commitments, displaying a blatant disregard for justice and decency,” the staffer said.
Another source that spoke to the publication revealed that Mokoena was down and out financially, after his app, MySportsBook, failed to take off.
Mokoena was also was dropped as the special advisor to former minister of sports, arts and culture Nathi Mthethwa.
“Walter is broke. He lost his job as the adviser to the minister and he is no longer a sports agent. His divorce also messed him up. The money he is getting from the odd jobs is not enough at all,” the source said.
Mokoena declined to comment on the matter, saying: “ I won’t comment as the matter would be determined in our court”.
