“My heart was not there at all” – DJ Fresh on why he dumped law school for the decks

Legendary South African wheel spinner DJ Fresh has reflected on his life in entertainment, which saw him ditch law school as he resolved that he was going to be a DJ at the age of 18, disappointing his parents in the process.

DJ Fresh has gone from humble beginnings to become one of Mzansi’s most revered entertainers and broadcasters and has been given credit for pioneering the kwaito and house music movements in that country.

Today, the DJ is one of the country’s most frequently booked performers overseas.

Sharing a picture on X, formerly Twitter, DJ Fresh highlighted the rocky part of his journey, which saw him drop his law school despite the objections of parents that desperately wanted him to be a lawyer.

In the picture, a younger, slimmer DJ Fresh is seen next to some decks.

“18 years old. Rocking parties with cassette tapes, like nobody my age!! Scared to death that they expect me to go to Law school soon, but my heart is not there at all.

“As fate would have it, and God having the sense of humour that she does, got my first radio gig when I was 19, sealing my DJ fate for good!!! IT WAS WORTH IT,” he wrote.

On his birthday back in 2021, DJ Fresh penned a heartfelt letter to his parents, who he credited for never giving up on him.

“Thank you, Mama Le Papa, for allowing me to scream into your lives at 2am on this day!! The sacrifices you made to make sure we were never short of anything have never gone unnoticed.

“It is, however, you never ever giving up on this troublesome, naughty kid, that blew my mind the most,” he wrote.
