‘My mother tried to abort me’ – Big Brother Naija’s Mercy Eke

The winner of Season 4 of Big Brother Naija, Mercy Eke, has claimed that her mother, while under pressure from relatives, tried to have an abortion while she was pregnant with her.

Mercy and Ike follows the love life of Mercy Eke, the winner of Big Brother Naija Season 4 and Ike Onyema, her fellow housemate, who began a relationship during their time in the Big Brother house.

“My mom told me that, when she was carrying me, there was this aunt of mine, my dad’s cousin, who came and asked her, ‘Are you still pregnant after all these kids you have?” she said.

She said her mum’s narration of the events preceding her birth had inspired her to try to achieve more in life.

“That really got my mom trying to abort me. My mum told that what she did was when she goes to the farm, she would climb a tree and intentionally fall from there to see if she could get rid of me.

“When she told me that, I had told myself that I had to make it, whatever it took to be somebody. I had to make her proud somehow for what she did for me,” she said.

Eke was the first female winner of Big Brother Naija, the most popular reality TV series in Nigeria, since the it began over a decade ago.

In March this year, Eke received the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award for Best Dressed Female.
