Veteran actor Sello Maake KaNcube has come out in defense of a honorary doctorate that was bestowed on him by Trinity International Bible University, an institution that South Africa’s Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande has said is not registered and is thus not fit to give out such recognition.
Maake KaNcube found himself in the eye of the storm over the past week, as he showed off his doctorate on social media.
However, many online argued that the doctorate was bogus, as Trinity University is not a recognised institution.
Responding to his critics, KaNcube posted: “To all those who felt like they had something to say, here is my official response. Mess plus Age gives you a MESSAGE! Keep listening. 🎶 Keeping watching.
“Thank you all for your positive messages to these new developments. 🙏🏾🙏🏾 With my wife Pearl Mbewe Maake Kancube ♥️”
KaNcube’s response came after Education Minister Nzimande rubbished Trinity University’s credentials.
“According to our records… Trinity International Bible University is not a registered private higher education institution,” the department’s spokesperson Veli Mbele told media in South Africa.
“Trinity International Bible University is therefore not authorised to offer any qualifications, including honorary degrees.
“We also wish to state that, as the department, we have written to Trinity International University before and warned them about continuing to operate illegally and for them to regularise their operations.
“We have also asked the Council on Higher Education (CHE) for guidance on how honorary qualifications should be offered and by who.
“As the department, we have nothing against Trinity International Bible University or the celebrities they have chosen to honour,” Mbele said.
