Police in South Africa have arrested six men for the murder of Kaizer Chiefs star, Luke Fleurs, who was shot and killed at a fuel station last week.
The police also said they had recovered Fleurs’ car, which had been stripped, on Monday.
According to police, Fleurs was waiting to be attended to at the petrol station when he was approached by unknown gunmen, who ordered him to get out of the vehicle.
The police said one of the suspects then shot him once on the upper body.
In a statement, police confirmed that the six suspects behind the fatal carjacking had been apprehended on Wednesday morning.
“The team that was appointed by the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni to trace and arrest the suspects who allegedly hijacked and killed the Kaizer Chiefs soccer player has made a breakthrough by arresting six suspects and recovering the victim’s car,” the statement reads.
“The six suspects were traced and arrested in Slovoville, Soweto, in the early hours of Wednesday, 10 April 2024, while the vehicle that was already stripped was recovered on Monday, 08 April 2024.”
Police also revealed that six were thought to be a part of a carjacking ring operating from Joburg.
“Police believe that the suspects are part of a syndicate that is responsible for car hijacking in Gauteng, and the search for more suspects is continuing.”
The suspects are set to appear before the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 12 April.
