SANDF to depart for China to evacuate South Africans in Wuhan

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) team deployed to evacuate South Africans from Wuhan in China – the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak – will be departing from O.R. Tambo International Airport tonight. SABC reporter Chriselda Lewis was at the airport.

In a statement released on Tuesday 10 March, the Inter-Ministerial Task Team (IMTT) announced that all plans had been finalised for the preparation of the 122 South Africans who are currently residing in Wuhan.

Originally the government received over 180 requests from the citizens residing in Wuhan to be repatriated back to South Africa. However, some South Africans indicated to the government their decision to stay on at their respective commitments in Wuhan.
