SOUTH AFRICA – Amapiano sensation Uncle Waffles has been accused of trying to swindle young musician OHP Sage out of his earnings, after she reportedly only offered him R16 000 (US$894) for him to forfeit all rights to their hit track Wadibusa.

The song has become a viral hit on social media platforms, particularly Tik Tok, while it has also managed to amass over 10 million streams on Spotify.

According to a source close to Uncle Waffles, the musician had only offered the 20-year-old R16000 for his hard work.

โ€œHe is the star behind the song. He made the hit what it is today. It’s his vocals and his brilliant songwriting,’ the insider told Zimoja.

“He sings the hook, and without him, the song would not have blown up.โ€

The source revealed that Uncle Waffles and her team had taken advantage of the young musicianโ€™s naivety.

โ€œHe is a kid; he is only interested in making great music and performing. He doesn’t know much about the business side of music, and people seem to take advantage of that.

“He was excited to be on a song with Waffles. He went into the studio and made a hit without discussing paperwork because he assumed his label would take care of everything after.โ€

Sage’s record label boss Phillip Makhate from Makhateโ€™s Productions said they rejected the R16 000 offer.

โ€œThey initially sent a contract to waive rights to the song, and that was strongly rejected, and we asked the team to do the right thing before the song can be removed from all streaming platforms.

“We never waived any rights to the song, OHP Sage is still entitled to master recording royalties and publishing royalties for Wadibusa song,โ€ Makhate said.

When asked about the current situation, OHP Sage, who is currently promoting his single Dlala Ntwana Yam, said that his label would deal with the situation.

โ€œI think that was the case in the beginning, but the label is resolving everything. I am good with everyone,โ€ he said.
