A Zimbabwean man, Bornface Banks, is in hot soup with South Africa’s Department of Correctional Services after he was identified as the man behind the video bragging about the ‘soft life’ in a South African prison that has gone viral on social media.
With many South Africans condemning the department for giving prisoners an easy ride, Banks has since been identified and is now facing punishment for possessing contraband.
He is allegedly being held at the Goodwood Correctional Centre on kidnapping allegations.
In the video circulating on social media, Banks can be seen taunting those who put him in prison, claiming that they were wrong to think he would suffer, as instead, he is enjoying his time behind bars because he is not only not buying his toiletries, he also has three meals a day and a free education as well.

“Hello haters, you put us in prison and think that we are suffering? No, my brother, we are doing extremely fine. Look at how happy we are. This morning we had breakfast, and in the afternoon we had lunch. We are about to have dinner.”
Department spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo said that Banks would be punished for his behaviour, while the cellphone he used to record the video had been confiscated.
“He is a Zimbabwean national remanded at Goodwood Correctional Centre for kidnapping allegations. A search exercise was conducted, and the used cellphone was confiscated,” he said.
Nxumalo added that cellphones were off-limits to prisoners.
“DCS is deeply incensed by this behaviour and there shall be strong action and consequences. Mobile phones are defined as contraband in correctional centres; hence, illegal access and usage is a punishable offence,” Nxumalo said.
