As if things can’t get any worse for Manchester United, another Instagram incident has popped up to increase the heat on the club and manager Jose Mourinho.
First it was Paul Pogba’s video resulted in a training-ground bust-up with Mourinho.
Now Antonio Valencia, the club captain of all people, liked a post on the social media network that called for the manager to be fired following the goalless Champions League draw against Valencia at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
The Valencia fan page, @teamvalencia25, posted two photos of the Ecuador right back with the caption: “I’m not even surprised about the outcome of this game. I always look forward to our games but recently Mourinho has made watching us a punishment now. Something needs to change. It’s time for Mourinho to go.It led to shocked Valencia fans expressing their surprise when Valencia himself liked the post, with @justinmottarshead replying: “Absolute shambles whoever is in charge of @antoniovalencia2525 Instagram thinks it’s okay to like this. They want sacking”
The post has since been changed to “We will come back stronger.”
On Wednesday, Valencia issued an apology, stating that he was right behind Mourinho. “Yesterday, I liked a post on Instagram without reading the text that accompanied the picture. These are not my views and I apologise for this.
“I am fully supportive of the manager and my teammates. We are all giving our everything to improve the results.”
UK media have reported that there is an apparent rift between Valencia and Mourinho after the 33-year-old did not attend the League Cup defeat to Derby County.
Valencia missed the 3-1 loss to West Ham at the weekend, but was restored to the starting line-up on Tuesday.
United’s next match is against Newcastle at Old Trafford on Saturday (6.30pm SA time). IOL Sport.
